Staying Active: An entrepreneurs no.1 rule

Move your body, protect your brain. Short, regular activity boosts focus, decision-making and stress tolerance.

Hunched over a computer screen, blinds drawn, the second Matcha of the morning already emptied. This is what many stereotype as ‘a typical e-commerce business owner’. But is it really a stereotype if that’s exactly what I look most days as a small business owner?

We all know that exercise is important for our mental and physical health. The real issue is that it becomes pushed to the side when Todo-s pile.

But the reality is that short and thoughtful exercise throughout the day “has immediate cognitive benefits” and “improves cognition, memory and executive function”

“Adults should do at least 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly”

So if you think about it, it’s the most important thing for your business. A healthy you = a healthy business.

I know you are all very busy people so what about the following options to add a bit of sweat to screen-time?

  • Make a 2×15 minute rule. After lunch hit the streets, put on some up-beat music and do a short 15 minute stroll. Then after work or during a phone call just do one more walk. Simple, right?
  • Swap traditional meetings for a ‘Walk-and-Talk’ meeting—did you know people actually open up more when you are walking side-by-side?
  • Pair activity to work types: yoga before creative, strength before admin. Eve realised that you’re more focused after exercise?
  • Track a tiny KPI: minutes moved per week next to revenue and leads

Personally after implementing the 2×15 minute rule my arvo-sleepies have completely vanished. Feels like I’ve just woken up (with some exaggeration).
